Once Within a Time
June 27, 2025 – January 12, 2026

Once Within a Time is a meandering narrative collage that reimagines Santa Fe as both artifact and stage—a living archive of stories, mythologies, and artistic interventions. Whether discovered within the SITE building or in unexpected local storefronts, each stop offers a glimpse into how personal histories loop into collective memory.
The exhibition foregrounds storytelling—both oral and visual—by pairing contemporary artworks with historical or fictional characters connected to Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico. Many commissions are site-specific, activating the distinctiveness of each venue with immersive installations and narrative encounters

Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line
June 20, 2025 – September 21, 2025
Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line is a beautifully curated, historically rich retrospective celebrating Mucha not only as an emblem of Art Nouveau, but also as a pioneer in mass‑visual communication. The exhibition’s layout bridges early works and global legacy, making it both informative and immersive. If you can’t make it to Santa Fe, its next stop will be Nelson‑Atkins Museum, Kansas City (April–August 2026).

Organized by the Mucha Foundation, this ambitious show features over 100 works from the Mucha Trust Collection, highlighting Alphonse Mucha’s development—from student drawings and book illustrations to his iconic posters and designs that created the Art Nouveau movement.

And in a fun twist it also explores the 1960s–70s revival of his aesthetic, showing its influence on psychedelic rock posters (e.g., Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones), comic books, and Japanese manga.

Eugenie Shonnard: Breaking the Mold

March 8 – September 1, 2025
“Eugenie Shonnard: Breaking the Mold” marks the inaugural posthumous exhibition of Eugenie Shonnard (1886–1978), a pioneering woman sculptor whose career carved a place for itself in American Modernism—especially within the artistic landscape of the Southwest

Breaking the Mold is a compelling and deeply research-driven exhibition that reclaims Eugenie Shonnard’s place in American art history—especially within the Southwest. It reveals her convergence of European Modernist training with local iconography and forms, and showcases her inventive spirit through material innovation and formal sensitivity.

A Circle Nothing Can Break
November 11, 2024 – March 1, 2026
This exhibition begins with a quote from a letter to her future husband Alfred Stieglitz, with Georgia comparing their relationship to “a circle that nothing can break”. This quote shows the importance of one of O’Keeffe’s most evocative motifs—the circle. It surveys key moments in her career when circular shapes and spirals emerge in her abstractions—first in the formative 1910s, and again in her late-period work during the 1970s, after a long hiatus from such themes.

The show features early works created under Alfred Stieglitz’s influence in New York and those from later challenging periods—including post-Stieglitz grief and her late creative revival—offering emotional and formal continuity through this simple but expressive geometric form

The International Folk Art Market brings the world’s finest folk art to Santa Fe each July. It’s a place where cultures from all corners of the globe are celebrated; where folk artists, often marginalized in their own communities, are elevated. Where the humanity of the handmade isn’t just discussed but is right in front of you as you move from stall to stall at a bustling outdoor event, taking in the shades, symbols, and smiles of nearly 60 countries gathered in one place. More than 150 artists participate, trekking to the United States from 52 different countries — and in four days thousands of visitors attend, purchasing millions in folk art, and more often than not, supplying income that helps sustain entire communities.

SITE SANTA FE celebrates its 30th Anniversary and 12th International Biennial with Once Within a Time — a sweeping tribute to the people who have shaped the Santa Fe region over centuries. Imagined as a vast family album, the biennial unfolds as a symphony of voices, stories, and identities, extending beyond SITE’s galleries into partner institutions and unexpected spaces across the city. Drawing inspiration from those who have lived in, passed through, or left their mark on Santa Fe and New Mexico, this landmark exhibition redefines place through collective memory and artistic dialogue. Curated by Cecilia Alemani.

Eugenie Shonnard: Breaking the Mold is the first posthumous major exhibition of the acclaimed sculptor. Shonnard was a pivotal figure for the history of art and sculpture in the Southwest, widely recognized during her own time for her contributions to the visual arts, yet largely overlooked in recent decades. This exhibition, with an accompanying publication, seeks to reintroduce Shonnard to a new generation of art enthusiasts. In a time period in which few women excelled in sculpture, Shonnard defied expectations and carved out a space for herself as a formidable presence in the American Southwest.

We first met artist Rebecca Fairfax at Art Santa Fe in 2024 and were intrigued with her expressive use of oil and cold wax to create each of her works of art. We wanted to know more about this artist and how this interesting medium became her choice. Let’s see what she has to say.

ABN: Introduce yourself — who you are and what is your vision as an artist is?

RF: I am an intuitive, abstract, realist and expressionist artist. A bit of a mouthful, I know, but each one describes my particular mix of abstract techniques with recognizable forms and my focus on expressing some small yet universal aspect of our complex human experience.

Only with oil and cold wax medium can I create so many multiple layers of contrasting thicknesses and colors – cool and warm, dark and light, opaque and transparent – that express energy, thought, mood and emotion. I seek to explore the interplay between the physical and metaphysical, where figures emerge and recede from and into the background and foreground, often as in a dream. I invite the viewer to enjoy the subtle yet often playful, quirky and whimsical narratives as well as the deeper meanings in each painting.

ABN: What is your background?

RF: I grew up in suburban Boston surrounded by the bold colors and textures of my mother’s finely crafted quilts and hooked rugs – she often exhibited them in local shows and even museums.

Still, my first career was as a public radio reporter and TV scriptwriter, magazine and newspaper journalist and children’s book author, all while supporting my daughter as a single mother. Working mostly freelance, I was able to live, work and extensively travel abroad — from Europe to Asia and South America. I also speak fluent French, good Spanish and some German and Russian. During those fascinating years, I wrote on pretty much everything — from Art to the Zuni.

In time, though, with a desire to express myself through the visual arts, I traded in my keyboard for a palette and canvas, experimenting with acrylic and oil until I discovered the challenges, delights and power of oil and cold wax.

ABN: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

RF: As with my writing career, I’m a bit of a workaholic – the creative process is so rich and exciting that it rarely sleeps, and I try to keep up with it. Time in my home studio opens new worlds every day – I can hardly wait to see what awaits. Paintings call from every easel and on my worktable, letting me know what they want to become. It’s a collaboration – I listen to the paint and cold wax, and we work together to bring images, ideas, and stories to life.

Each piece takes weeks or longer to complete – from the initial layers of gesso through the drying or semi-drying of each layer to the drawing of each image and excavating into the paint to the final application of stain on the sanded canvas cradles. There is always so much to do in preparing my work for shows and collectors.

ABN: What artist(s) inspire you?

RF: So many inspire me – from the early cave people to the latest wave of creatives seeking new modes of visual expression with digital art. That said, I have been most influenced by Renaissance figure drawings, and the colors, textures and creative courage of Manet, Van Gogh, Sargent, Turner, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler and so many others – I’m both a traditionalist and modernist in this 21st century.

Outside of the visual arts, my great inspirations have been the mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, the avant-garde filmmaker, Maya Deren, the inimitable Bob Dylan and so many of the great early rock ‘n roll songwriters/poets. I often find ways to incorporate their images and vision into my work.

ABN: What is the best advice you’ve received?

RF: Stay true to your vision. This can be so challenging for so many artists as they work to find and maintain their unique style and voice. There are many ups and downs that come with following one’s own creative journey, and while we should always be open to new ideas and influences, we must primarily remain true to our creative self.

ABN: When you are not working, where can we find you?

RF: Taking a daily morning walk with my husband in our rural Santa Fe neighborhood; enjoying time with friends and other artists; attending concerts, gallery and museum openings; and traveling to the ocean, the only thing missing in our beautiful New Mexico landscape. Having spent my summers on Cape Cod, I always long for the sound of waves while walking on a beach.

RF: This year, after a long, wonderful winter of hibernating and painting in my studio, I will be unveiling and exhibiting a new series, “Emerging and Receding,” at both the Santa Fe Studio Tour during the last two weekends of June, and Art Santa Fe in mid-July.

This is a huge and exciting step forward in my artistic evolution; I’ll have up to 25 paintings that bring together all that I have been working toward since embarking on my artistic journey. While I will be showing all of those works during the Studio Tour, a small selection will be available during Art Santa Fe. And my next step is gallery representation – stay tuned!

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what is your vision as an artist?

A: I was born and raised in Ohio and have been an artist since I was a child. My parents encouraged me to pursue art. I studied art and graphic design at Kent State University. I had a fear of failure as an artist. I also didn’t see a clear career path for Art, so I spent nearly 16 years in the business world.

On a business trip in 2014, I visited Saint Petersburg, FL and found a town alive with the arts. I sincerely felt inspired to move there so I decided to make the move from Ohio to Florida and juggle art and a career. I started painting and putting things into local galleries.

I applied and was awarded my very first mural with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018. After that project, I started getting weekly calls to do more murals and said good bye to the corporate world. Since then, I’ve done over 30 murals nationwide, have original art in over 100 homes nationwide. I’ve also painted one of the worlds first flying art pieces called “The Mooney Anomaly” which is internationally recognized in the Aviation world.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: My art inspiration came from going to museums in my younger years. I was always drawn to vibrant and unique works from the likes of Gustav Klimt, Chuck Close, Dali, Picasso, Warhol, and Piet Mondrian. I try my best to follow my inspiration and stand beside it in my own unique way.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: Early, On, the best advice I got was from a close friend in Saint Pete, Christian McAlhaney. He’s the lead guitarist and vocalist for the international touring rock band, Anberlin. He drew parallels to my art and how rock bands need to tour and play shows to earn a fanbase. In 2018 Christian gave me some tough love. “Matt, I love the the art you’re doing, but don’t forget you’re nothing right now. Get your work out there and do some murals.” He then referenced Shine Festival, which is a major international Mural Festival in Saint Petersburg, FL.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

My approach to every mural and commission is to stay grateful for each commission, treat customers like lifetime friends, and let my past fears drive my inspiration and work ethic. When not working on commissions and new art, you’ll find me building old cars, cycling, running the beach, seeing live music and getting tattoos.

Art Santa Fe is incredibly important to me. It’s my first time in the southwestern United States sharing my work. Im out of my comfort zone. I have no established base here, no fans, yet grateful to be here. My plan over the past two years is to get out of my Florida comfort zone and start growing in other areas.
Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your vision as an artist is? What is your background?

A: A retired architect residing in New Mexico for most of the last 50 years, I am living a lifelong calling, to be a fine artist. I believe we cannot live without art. Whether it is music, film, dance, or visual art, it feeds our soul. I strive to make art that reaches, touches, and connects us to ourselves and others. I have chosen the language of abstract art, a language like no other, with no dictionary to translate it but is open to each individual’s imagination and interpretation. Unlike architecture, there are no constraints. Total freedom is a refreshing change.

My background significantly influences my art. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, a place with honest, hardworking people. My dream, even as a young child, was to become an architect. With encouragement from my family, I attended Franklin and Marshall College where I studied art history and perfected studio skills that prepared me to pursue an M Arch from the University of New Mexico. I became licensed and through a very successful and rewarding, 40-year architectural practice, I was able to design a diverse portfolio of projects and achieve a fellowship in the American Institute of Architects. In 2020, I retired and now realizing another dream, to be a fine artist.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: My architectural training and practice taught me a way of thinking. I value simplicity. I’m fascinated by geometry, strong shape and form. My focus is composition. I’m not a fan of making “wallpaper” by creating amorphous or repetitive patterns. I believe, like a good building considers and organizes both the positive (interior) and negative (exterior) space, a good painting does the same. Regarding color and contrast, the high desert environment of the southwest inspired and awakened my creative sensibilities. What can be more visually powerful than an orange sky with purple clouds? Or the lush green, life-filled forest of the Rio Grande moving through rocky earthen, parched mountains? Those contrasts and others are compelling.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: I am most inspired by Richard Diebenkorn, a genius in composition and color. Never constrained by formalistic rules, he used the entire canvas in unpredictable ways. He was a master of creating strong shapes and forms. He was not afraid to use any color adjacent to any other. His use of line created movement while also contrasting simple planes of color. Like many great artists, he was a rule-breaker for his time. We know he challenged the status quo at the University of New Mexico when he was there in 1950. No adobes adorned with chiles for him. That inspires me.

I’m inspired by many other artists but most notably, the dramatic work of JMW Turner, the color and techniques of Cezanne, Monet and Matisse, and the boldness and simplicity of Franz Kline. Lately, I am enamored with the spontaneity of contemporary artist, David Mankin.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: My architectural training taught me to always say, “What if” never relying on one idea. But the best advice that I struggle to comply with daily tells me to not overthink, to follow my own instincts, and to not be afraid to make an ugly painting. Mistakes are opportunities.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: Residing in Albuquerque, you can find me with my family and friends enjoying New Mexico’s scenery and perfect weather. Or traveling to see and experience new places that recharge me.

Q: What does exhibiting at Art Santa Fe 2024 mean to you?

A: I’ve been painting in earnest now for about 5 years. Although I have successfully shown my work locally, I’m exhibiting in Art Santa Fe to finally test the waters with a broader audience. The truth is, that artists are constantly looking for validation. I hope I get it here.

A: My name is Vivienne Riggio, I am a Santa Fe-based sculptor. My artistic journey is a testament to a life infused with observation and the transformation of the mundane into the extraordinary. As a way of manifesting my vision, I fabricate large-scale mythical creatures that connect us to another time, another place.

I draw from my experience in operatic costuming and apparel design and use traditional Southwestern embroidery techniques, sheep’s wool up-cycled paper, and unusual objects.

My desire is that these shaman-like sculptures evoke a departure from conventional imagery to an unfamiliar place of wonder. Ultimately, I hope the viewer connects with that other place, a departure from their day-to-day thinking. For some these pieces take on a lifelike presence and others just enjoy the craftsmanship and appreciate them just as a work of art.

Born in Murphysboro, Illinois, my path to becoming an artist was as intuitive as it was inevitable. From my earliest memories, I was captivated by shapes, images, and designs, finding intrigue and expression in the arts from a tender age. My childhood, characterized by introspection and a deep internalization of my surroundings, laid the foundation for a unique artistic language, which I began articulating through three-dimensional art as early as five years old.

My grandparents emigrated to the US from Southern Italy and eventually settled in the Midwest. Their daily lives, though extreme from what Sicilia offered, gave them sustenance and a sense of belonging to something larger.

In the late fifties, my parents heeded the California call and settled in the Bay Area, a small town ripening with revolutionary fervor. As teens, my siblings and I drank up the culture outside our front door questioning nothing and everything.

This is a small taste of what I inherited and was exposed to. As a young girl, I stood back and observed family dynamics, Catholicism, and academics and spent much of my time creating unusual art as a way of processing and expressing. It’s been that way ever since.

In my late thirties, I discovered New Mexico after a summer of picking fruit in British Columbia. Once landed outside of Albuquerque, I worked at the state fair, at restaurants, and wrote short stories. After a gig at the Santa Fe Opera as a seasonal worker in the costume shop, my artistic vision leaped toward larger dimensional pieces. I eventually settled in Santa Fe, but not before going back and forth to the West Coast and moving where my work took me.

I dedicated my career to labor rights, traveling to factories throughout Latin America, Asia, and North America, interviewing workers and factory owners. I’m now a permanent resident and live a stone’s throw from the Santa Fe River.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: The core of my artistic philosophy lies in the genuine, unfiltered interaction with the world around me. Whether I am surrounded by the tranquility of nature or immersed in the vibrant energy of a city, every experience is a wellspring of inspiration. My art is a means of distilling these experiences, transforming them into a language of shapes, textures, and forms that resonate on a visceral level. This process is not just about creation but is a form of communication, a way of sharing my perspective and inviting others to see the world through a different lens.

What motivates me to create is the endless potential for transformation—an object, a piece of fabric, or a fleeting image can become a conduit for profound expressions and conversations. I aim to create art that not only captivates visually but also engages on an emotional and intellectual level, prompting reflection and eliciting a sense of wonder. Through my work, I strive to offer a moment of connection, an opportunity for viewers to engage with their surroundings and their inner selves in new and unexpected ways.

Q: Introduce yourself – who you are and what your vision as an artist is? What is your background?

A: More than a printmaker, or painter, I think of myself as an image maker. My background is in fashion design and pattern making. I worked in the ‘rag trade’ designing clothing and traveling all over the third world to see how well these designs were put together.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: I enjoy working in the studio on various media including printmaking and painting as well as collage. I am drawn to historic female characters; strong women and what I imagine that they would wear.

I create, I do not quantify or measure time, I work until the artwork speaks to me and tells me it is complete. It’s a joyful calling. I know that my audience is the world’s smallest and that I am not attempting a mass-market appeal. I listen to my imagination and I try to stay on a flow that avoids tributaries and tangents. What I ask myself each time I come near completion of an artwork is: is this piece remarkable? That’s how I measure.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: I am inspired by many of the modernists, especially the Santa Fe and Taos modernists of the early 20th century. Also, I love to look at ancient manuscripts and illuminations for pattern, and composition. The Ukiyo-e Japanese woodcut print artists are always a delight to look at and I am drawn to contemporary public-art artists such as Shepard Fairey and emerging black artists such as Delita Martin and Bisa Butler.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The best advice I’ve received is from a professor in my Masters Degree program who told me to see more and paint less. On a more business-of-art direction I listen to Seth Godin, Akimbo podcast and find value in his philosophy about the world’s smallest audience and being authentic and remarkable with my work.

Q: What does exhibiting at Art Santa Fe 2024 mean to you?

A: Exhibiting at Art Santa Fe means a lot to me in that it is an opportunity to show with an Event Company that has great experience and a track record of putting on well-marketed and well-designed shows of high-caliber artists. I am hoping to find a small audience of galleries and collectors who are interested in purchasing and representing my artwork.

Having worked as an architect for forty years, Bill says he has contributed to the transformation of the New Mexico landscape. His sharp sense of composition, structure, and balance from working in architecture gives a definite perspective to his art. Simple geometry and powerful form with an emphasis on the significance of the relationship between interior (positive) and exterior (negative) space define his design approach. Bill says he picked up the ability to think and see globally. His abstract paintings arouse feelings of solidity, substance, and emotion. The spectacular visual contrasts of the high desert Southwest serve as his inspiration.

Ruth Andre is a recent resident of the farmlands of southern Missouri having recently relocated from the back country of northern California. Early in her career, her interest in art led her to represent artists and photographers. Then she took her first painting workshop and her personal journey as an artist began. Her career as an artist representative and her individual art study was a molding that formed what she does today. She has always taken her inspiration from her surroundings, but the seasonal changes and landscape in Missouri have enhanced her palette. She sees her works as an open door to her heart and what life and her surroundings bring her way.
