As Artexpo New York presents its 46th edition at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side, a new addition has been made to the acclaimed fair programming: The Visionaries. Each Visionary is selected by Artexpo’s curatorial team based on three factors:

Unswerving representation of artist innovators, consistently bringing forward-thinking cutting-edge art to the fair

Articulate and distinctive presentation of each artist’s work, exceeding all display guidelines

Consistent exhibition at the fair over a period of three or more years

From the amazing list of exhibitors, Artexpo’s curators present the inaugural group of Visionaries — an acclaimed group of exhibitors giving Artexpo attendees a first-hand opportunity to see and collect incredible original art.

This year’s Artexpo New York takes place March 30-April 2, 2023, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Each year, the fair’s special programs range from immersive artist-led Art Lab experiences to compelling Art Talks and exciting Meet the Artist sessions.

Check out the 2023 Artexpo New York Visionaries. Don’t miss their exceptional exhibit and artists!

Tribes Art Africa Gallery (TAAG) was founded in 2001 by Rodney Asikhia and is now recognized as the Rodney Asikhia Gallery. The gallery is driven by a passion for beauty and quality in art. This quality is reflected in the works selected and in their handling and presentation. As its name indicates, one of its driving philosophies and missions is the promotion of art from Africa and the African diaspora. To this end, it has represented well over a hundred African artists in the 20 years since its founding. Rodney Asikhia, the gallery founder, believes that African artists and all other artists of color have important stories to tell and unique viewpoints to share.

In addition to this, the work of the gallery is aimed at addressing and correcting the racial bias that leaves black artists and black art underrepresented in many art institutions around the world. It also emphasizes the importance of visual arts to communities by organizing public programs, lectures, symposia, forums, and the like. All of these also ensure that the promotion and sale of artworks are met with critical engagement and appreciation. TAAG Gallery specializes in artist management, art collections, art management, art sale, art leasing, industry reports, auctions, and art commissions.

Featured Artists

At their booth at the Artexpo Dallas 2022, TAAG will be showing the works of 6 artists: Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Sisqo Ndombe, Madoti Oluwadamilare, Bara Sketchbook, Kelani Fatai, and Wilson Imini. Several of the works being exhibited are figurative and portrait paintings featuring black subjects. The paintings, in style, composition and theme, explore personhood, identity, urbanity, strength, human beauty, personal history and individual agency.

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Versil, 2022, Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas, 50 × 50 inches.
Daniel Gyekyi Gyan is a Ghanaian artist currently living and working in Accra, Ghana. Gyan studied at Accra’s Ghanatta College of Art and Design. He graduated in 2008 and took to painting in earnest. The sources of his inspiration derive from his immediate neighbourhood, the internet, fashion, models and urban culture. His canvases bear all these influences, as he strives to bring into every piece as much of his world as he can.

Madoti Oluwadamilare

Madoti Oluwadamilare is a contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He taught himself and mastered his art through practice and consistency. Inspired by his environment, his paintings capture the struggle of individuals who try to be upright amidst the harsh reality surrounding them. His paintings are bright-colored and show figures with flower or lightbulb heads. His clean lines, great facility with color, and carefully selected contemporary backgrounds express a range of moods: self-assured, thoughtful, calm, flummoxed, and cheerful.

Sisqo Ndombe

Sisquo Ndombe, Manuela, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 128 × 98 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery

Sisqo Ndombe is a Congolese artist who makes figurative paintings with magical realist or surrealist elements. His work makes use of bright colors and shows subjects with ecstatic gazes. This may be read as a celebration of self and of identity. His paintings with their pairings of dual figures, with their holding of cockerels and flowers, speak to inheritance, beauty, complexity, and African spirituality.

Kelani Fatai

Kelani Fatai is a young Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied painting and design at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. His works are figurative paintings with a strong focus on portraits of women dressed in fashionable clothes. Very notably, the backgrounds in his paintings are covered in flowers. The realism and strongly aesthetic quality of his paintings, done in a style reminiscent of Kehinde Wiley, give them their great appeal.

Bara Sketchbook

Bara Sketchbook, The sons of Wilde and wilden, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 60 × 48 in (152.4 × 121.9 cm). Image Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery.

Bara Sketchbook is a painter whose works are done in strong and vivid neon colours. The subjects of his painting are often presented in intimate poses, and from how much character he infuses through the use of colours and intense gazes, one can surmise that they have strong, complex personalities. He, very pointedly, is a painter of illustrious figures.

Wilson Imini

Wilson Imini, Untitled, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 111.8 × 88.9 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery

Wilson Imini is a young painter based in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. His interests and œuvre are focused on figurative paintings of famous figures in which he blends life portraiture with imagination. The paintings are done in bright—or more appropriately, bold colours. There are large swathes of sky and grass and intense young faces tinged red. The figures in the paintings are self-assured and powerful, occupying a central world in which all forces and influences seem to belong to and revolve around them.

Rodney Asikhia will be exhibiting at Booth 114 at Artexpo Dallas from September 16 – 18, 2022.

When we were contacted by artfairmag.com last month, we were delighted to learn that they are positioning themselves as a global art fair database. With nearly 400 international fairs currently listed, including the 6 fairs owned by Redwood Art Group, they are quickly becoming the resource they intend to be.

With a desire to give voice to fair Directors by adding insights on their fair’s page, they have more than 90 fair directors who have shared valuable information about their fairs, exhibitors, and what to expect when collectors attend the event. From TEFAF, Frieze, Masterpiece London, and Art Basel to Design Miami, VOLTA, British Art Fair, Affordable Art Fair, SCOPE, Red Dot Miami, and Spectrum Miami, there’s a wealth of information to serve as an ultimate guide to art fairs across the globe.

We asked founder Pauline Loeb a few questions about herself and artfairmag and think you’ll enjoy knowing more about this terrific resource.

Q: Tell us about yourself – who are you and what do you do?

My name is Pauline Loeb, I am French, 34 years old, and a proud mum of soon to be 2 children. I am the founder of artfairmag.com, the only comprehensive art fair database. I have always been surrounded by art as my dad was an auctioneer and took us to museums and auction houses every week, so I knew very young that I wanted to work in the art industry. After studying Art History in Paris, I worked for 8 years in Galerie Kugel, a wonderful place that offers a uniquely wide range of high-quality antique specialties. Then I had my first baby and my husband and I moved to London. It was the perfect time to start a project that I had been thinking about for years.

Q: Tell us about artfairmag.com — when was it started and the premise behind it.

I’ve always loved art fairs. I love their atmosphere, their diversity, the beauty they bring out… It is quite an experience. Before the Covid-19 situation, I used to go to fairs once or twice a month, as a visitor and as a collector. I also used to participate every year in TEFAF Maastricht when I was working for the Kugel brothers. Planning the next fair to visit was quite a challenge as there wasn’t a reliable calendar that lists them all. I was dreaming about creating a convenient tool for art market professionals, collectors, and all art fair lovers. That’s how artfairmag started. I have worked very hard on this project since 2018 and the website was launched in September 2019. It wasn’t easy to collect all the data, create a beautiful but intuitive website, and build a competent team. But it was well worth it.

Today, artfairmag is more than a calendar. Each fair, no matter its size or prestige, has its dedicated page with all the relevant information and most of them have inclusive insights from their director. More than 95 fair directors have participated so far – TEFAF, FIAC, Masterpiece, BRAFA, ART021, KIAF, Art Paris, Redwood, and so many others – and this will keep on growing as we are always adding new insights (https://www.artfairmag.com/fair-directors-insights/). These insights are highly valuable as they help our audience to get the spirit of the show, the price range of the pieces exhibited, the style of the participating galleries, and so on.

Our ground-breaking website is all about art fairs worldwide. With our convenient tools, users can easily find and plan their next fair to visit. We gather the most relevant information about each fair and compile it in a clear overview, eliminating the need to search on endless separate websites to find the necessary information.

Q: What are the programs you are working on for the remainder of 2021?

In March 2020, the pandemic hit the art market hard and all galleries were forced to close for months. As they are for me the beating heart of art fairs, I wanted to help them as much as I could.

One thing I was able to offer them was visibility and the chance to be discovered or rediscovered by a qualitative audience. I started to interview some of the most talented art dealers in their field – contemporary, modern, antique art, but also primitive and oriental art. Kamel Mennour, Massimo Di Carlo, Colnaghi, Almine Rech, TOMASSO, Ben Janssen, Oscar Graf were part of them ( https://www.artfairmag.com/interviews-with-art-dealers/). I won’t stop here of course; many more interviews will come before the end of 2021.

Q: Anything new planned for 2022?

We have several interesting projects lined up to develop the website further, making it even more comprehensive. It is a bit too early to talk about them, but the main idea is to make artfairmag the only reference website for art fairs – both for collectors and amateurs, as well as for the professionals who participate or visit them, by centralizing all information about the shows and their upstream preparation.

Q: What else should we know?

artfairmag is perpetually evolving. Of course, we need to constantly update our calendar and the practical information of each show. Moreover, the number of art fairs varies every month: some new is created and some, unfortunately, won’t be able to be hosted anymore. Even if we have some reliable sources that keep us posted, we are always happy to receive an email from a visitor to tell us about a change or give us some personal insight!

Artists all over the world rely on art fairs and festivals to promote their brand and sell their products. Many artists depend on these events for their livelihood, and many do very well.

According to the TEFAF Art Marketing Report for 2018, over one million people attended the world’s top 20 art fairs last year. And projected sales for this year hover around the $45 billion mark.
That’s 45 BILLION dollars!

So when I tell you that art fairs are the best way I know to sell art, the numbers back me up.

Art fairs and festivals can also help you build audience, create community, and command the attention of gallerists and curators.

If you’re an artist who’s interested in using this powerful opportunity to build your career, I’ve created these Top 10 Tips for artists wanting to access the powerful reach of art fairs:

Put the research first. Preparation is your best friend because when it comes to art fairs, you can’t plan too much.

Follow instructions. Artists are known for breaking the rules, but the place to break them is in your work, not in your professional submissions.

Get super-organized and create a system to make sure all the details are covered. This will make the difference between a fair experience that’s fluid and focused, and a fair experience that’s frantic and confusing.

Pay attention to your brand when you exhibit. All of your materials should be created with your brand in mind, even down to the details. It’s all about consistency and authenticity.

Don’t overhang your booth! Art fairs are overwhelming enough. The booths that stand out and are the most inviting are the booths that allow viewers — and the artwork — the space to breathe.

Art fairs are an excellent investment, but think long term. Don’t invest everything you have in one art fair, there are too many variables outside of your control. So plan for success, but keep your feet on the ground and manage your expectations.

Promote your booth before and during the fair. Be sure to let people know exactly where to find you. Share your excitement with your audience!

Be sure to follow up on your leads because the best sales often happen after the fair.

Stay positive, even when things don’t appear to be going your way. Your energy affects everything.

Remember that art fairs are a powerful way to build relationships – both with an audience and with other artists. Be sure to put your best smile on and engage!

You don’t have to be an exhibitor to get the benefits of a fair. It’s also important to see what other artists are doing, what galleries are showing, and finding work that inspires you.

So even if you don’t have any plans to exhibit in an art fair yourself, I urge you to visit art fairs whenever you get the opportunity. You’ll always find something to learn, someone to meet, and something to see.

Learn more about art fairs and festivals at The Working Artist website. The Art Fair Essentials program is an online workshop that will fast track your success. Honestly, there is nothing else like it on the market. For more information: click here.
