Through abstraction, he transforms tension into softness and noise into quiet strength. For Thanh, art is a guide to inner peace, inviting viewers to pause, breathe, and be renewed.

With its sun-soaked beaches, lush parks, and sparkling waterfront, San Diego has long been a city that inspires creativity. Beyond the postcard-perfect scenery lies a thriving art scene — one filled with world-class museums, contemporary galleries, and an ever-growing community of artists and collectors.

Amid this vibrant coastal culture stands Lorna York, founder and owner of Madison Gallery, whose vision and dedication have helped shape San Diego’s reputation as a destination for fine art. We had the pleasure of checking in with Lorna to explore what it takes to create — and sustain — a successful gallery in this dynamic city.

ABN: Lorna, for readers who may not yet know you – can you share a bit about your background and how Madison Gallery came to be?

Lorna York: I opened Madison Gallery over 20 years ago with a simple conviction that world-class contemporary art should be accessible beyond the usual cultural capitals. What began as a small coastal gallery in San Diego has grown into a $50 million business and one of Southern California’s leading contemporary art destinations — built entirely from the ground up. I started Madison Gallery with no outside investors, just a deep belief in the artists I represent and a desire to create meaningful cultural dialogue in San Diego.

When I first opened Madison Gallery, people questioned whether a high-end contemporary program could thrive outside of main cultural capitals. Two decades later, we’re seeing collectors fly in from across the country and media comparing our exhibits to those in New York and LA. That evolution affirms what I’ve always believed – that great art transcends geography.

ABN: What was the driving vision behind the gallery, and how has that evolved over time?

LY: From the beginning, Madison Gallery has been guided by the idea that art is an experience – not just an object. Our collectors are drawn to the stories, the emotional resonance, and the cultural relevance behind the work. Today’s generation of collectors is less interested in gatekeeping or elitism; they want to be invited into a narrative. So we create that context – helping them connect intellectually and personally with the artists.

Over the years, our mission has expanded from representing a roster of exceptional contemporary artists to truly shaping the region’s cultural landscape. We’re proud to be among the few galleries in San Diego County introducing international artists of the caliber typically seen in New York or Los Angeles — artists like RETNA and Radenko Milak — to this market.

ABN: What sets Madison Gallery apart from other contemporary art galleries?

LY: We’re a thriving, independent gallery at a time when headlines about major galleries shuttering are increasingly common. I think our longevity stems from two things: our relationships and our perspective. We take an extremely personal, long-view approach to every artist and collector we work with. That means guiding clients through the narrative and emotional layers of the art they live with, while giving our artists the platform and resources to develop museum-level exhibitions. And we’ve remained women-owned and women-lead, which brings a different energy to how we do business: relational, intuitive, but also strategic and resilient. We’ve come a long way in what is considered a male-dominated field — and in a shrinking market, no less.

ABN: How would you describe your curatorial philosophy?

LY: I’m drawn to art that invites people to connect – with themselves, with others, or something bigger. Whether it’s the powerful scriptural abstraction of RETNA’s recent exhibit, Love Letter | Carta De Amor, or the profound watercolors in Radenko Milak’s current exhibit, Four Seasons Interrupted, we’re always looking for work that evokes connection and cultural dialogue. Both artists, along with the range of mid-career artists we represent, embody what I consider Madison Gallery’s essence: they tell stories that transcend language and geography, reminding us that art remains one of our most universal forms of connection.

ABN: How do you see the role of the gallerist evolving, especially in a changing art economy?

LY: Gallerists today must be translators – not just sellers. We’re bridging artists and audiences across continents, platforms, and generations. At Madison Gallery, we think in terms of legacy: how are we future-proofing our artists’ careers, and how are we contributing to a richer, more inclusive art ecosystem here in San Diego? That means strategic partnerships, international art-fair participation, and collector education — but also, creating space for meaningful conversation.

LY: We just wrapped up a major exhibit with RETNA and now we’re unveiling Radenko Milak’s Four Seasons Interrupted, on view now through December 15th at our gallery. This will be Milak’s second solo exhibit with us and we’re excited to welcome him back to our gallery to showcase his latest body of work, which grapples with the fragility of nature and time.

Looking ahead, we’re expanding our presence internationally, including our third presentation at Zona Maco in Mexico City next year. I also look forward to showcasing my artists again at Art Dusseldorf and Istanbul Art Fair. For me, it’s about continuing to build bridges between artists, collectors, and cultures.

ABN: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring gallerists or collectors?

LY: Lead with curiosity and integrity. Build relationships first, the sales will follow. If you lean into your vision and stay open, engaged, and honest, you’ll build something that lasts.

Nikolai Petrov’s wood sculpture exemplifies the artist’s mastery in transforming raw timber into evocative forms. Each piece reflects a harmonious balance between intricate detail and bold, sweeping lines, capturing both the essence of natural elements and the complexity of human emotion. Petrov employs traditional carving techniques, enhanced by a contemporary aesthetic, to create sculptures that resonate with viewers on multiple levels. The use of natural oils highlights the wood’s inherent beauty, allowing light and shadow to play across the surface, adding depth and movement. This artwork not only showcases Petrov’s technical skill but also invites contemplation and connection with the organic world.

Agora Gallery was founded in 1984, on Greene Street in Soho, by Miki Stiles, an artist who sought to create a hub for emerging artists working in similar mediums and methodologies to come together to present their work. Agora Gallery’s name comes from the Greek word “ἀγορά,” meaning “open marketplace,” a place where people gather not only to buy and sell goods, but also to meet like-minded individuals and exchange news and ideas – a place where everyone is welcome. With those ideals in mind, Agora Gallery showcases a spectacular array of talented artists from both across the globe, and from the local New York area, inviting collectors to view their work both in-person in the gallery, as well as on its online gallery.

Art Business News recently had the opportunity to meet with Agora’s Director, Sabrina Gilbertson, and get her perspective on the gallery, its business, and their upcoming exhibition at Red Dot Miami during Miami Art Week.

ABN: Introduce yourself — who are you, what is the vision of the gallery, and how do you work with artists?

SG: I am the Director of Agora Gallery, which under the Agora Group, houses AGI Fine Art, an artist agency focused on promotion for artists. I have worked in the New York City art world for nearly two decades, and my experience includes curating exhibitions, coordinating art fairs, and overseeing professional growth for emerging and mid-career artists from around the world.

AGI Fine Art connects artists to exhibition opportunities and industry expertise. Its methodology looks back to roots under the Agora Group, which combines over 40 years of experience in the New York art market. Our shared vision is to provide tailored career guidance, enhance visibility and help navigate the evolving art landscape throughout each stage of artistic development.

ABN:. What is your background and how does it fit with the history of the Agora Group?

SG: Not unlike many of us working in the art world, including Agora’s founder, the late Miki Stiles, I am an artist. I was classically trained at Boston University and moved to New York following my studies. While I didn’t know at the time precisely where that move would lead, I was always certain that I needed to be surrounded by art. I started working at Agora in 2008, as part of the team led by former director, Angela Di Bello

ABN: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact the gallery?

SG: Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with an inspiring compass of art professionals and talented individuals. As an artist myself, I understand the sensitivity that both challenges and propels creativity, as well as the balance of storytelling. In my professional career, this background has not only allowed me to connect more deeply with my artists, but has also been integral to my approach when it comes to curation, commercial marketability and artist promotion in the gallery.

Community is also an important value for me, and aligns with the mission Miki envisioned for Agora — a creative hub where artists could come together to present their work, share ideas and shine opportunities for new talent in a highly competitive market. This foundation continues to guide our programs today.

ABN: What is the best advice you’ve received?

SG: Slow down. In such a fast-paced environment, it’s easy to get swept up in the constant movement; however, I think some of our greatest successes are in those quiet moments when we can step back with clear eyes, and be open to a fresh perspective.

SG: For us, Red Dot offers an important entry point to the Miami market and global art fair audience. Having exhibited at Red Dot for a number of years, we know we can count on a professional fair team, high foot traffic, engaging attendees and heightened visibility.

Miami Art Week casts a unique net that has the ability to pair diverse pockets of artists with equally dynamic collectors. There’s something for everyone, which can’t always be said for art events of similar scale, and Red Dot is no exception. The energy is electric and the exposure simply invaluable.

ABN: When you are not working, where can we find you?

SG: With my family! As a mother of two, most of my time and energy is absorbed by the constant dance between work and parenting. I try to carve out space for creativity whenever I can. I’ve learned that remaining open to making or absorbing art in any form, even when it feels impossible, is not only necessary, but makes me a better human, and sets a great example for my kids.

As Artexpo New York presents its 46th edition at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side, a new addition has been made to the acclaimed fair programming: The Visionaries. Each Visionary is selected by Artexpo’s curatorial team based on three factors:

Unswerving representation of artist innovators, consistently bringing forward-thinking cutting-edge art to the fair

Articulate and distinctive presentation of each artist’s work, exceeding all display guidelines

Consistent exhibition at the fair over a period of three or more years

From the amazing list of exhibitors, Artexpo’s curators present the inaugural group of Visionaries — an acclaimed group of exhibitors giving Artexpo attendees a first-hand opportunity to see and collect incredible original art.

This year’s Artexpo New York takes place March 30-April 2, 2023, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Each year, the fair’s special programs range from immersive artist-led Art Lab experiences to compelling Art Talks and exciting Meet the Artist sessions.

Check out the 2023 Artexpo New York Visionaries. Don’t miss their exceptional exhibit and artists!

Tribes Art Africa Gallery (TAAG) was founded in 2001 by Rodney Asikhia and is now recognized as the Rodney Asikhia Gallery. The gallery is driven by a passion for beauty and quality in art. This quality is reflected in the works selected and in their handling and presentation. As its name indicates, one of its driving philosophies and missions is the promotion of art from Africa and the African diaspora. To this end, it has represented well over a hundred African artists in the 20 years since its founding. Rodney Asikhia, the gallery founder, believes that African artists and all other artists of color have important stories to tell and unique viewpoints to share.

In addition to this, the work of the gallery is aimed at addressing and correcting the racial bias that leaves black artists and black art underrepresented in many art institutions around the world. It also emphasizes the importance of visual arts to communities by organizing public programs, lectures, symposia, forums, and the like. All of these also ensure that the promotion and sale of artworks are met with critical engagement and appreciation. TAAG Gallery specializes in artist management, art collections, art management, art sale, art leasing, industry reports, auctions, and art commissions.

Featured Artists

At their booth at the Artexpo Dallas 2022, TAAG will be showing the works of 6 artists: Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Sisqo Ndombe, Madoti Oluwadamilare, Bara Sketchbook, Kelani Fatai, and Wilson Imini. Several of the works being exhibited are figurative and portrait paintings featuring black subjects. The paintings, in style, composition and theme, explore personhood, identity, urbanity, strength, human beauty, personal history and individual agency.

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Versil, 2022, Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas, 50 × 50 inches.
Daniel Gyekyi Gyan is a Ghanaian artist currently living and working in Accra, Ghana. Gyan studied at Accra’s Ghanatta College of Art and Design. He graduated in 2008 and took to painting in earnest. The sources of his inspiration derive from his immediate neighbourhood, the internet, fashion, models and urban culture. His canvases bear all these influences, as he strives to bring into every piece as much of his world as he can.

Madoti Oluwadamilare

Madoti Oluwadamilare is a contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He taught himself and mastered his art through practice and consistency. Inspired by his environment, his paintings capture the struggle of individuals who try to be upright amidst the harsh reality surrounding them. His paintings are bright-colored and show figures with flower or lightbulb heads. His clean lines, great facility with color, and carefully selected contemporary backgrounds express a range of moods: self-assured, thoughtful, calm, flummoxed, and cheerful.

Sisqo Ndombe

Sisquo Ndombe, Manuela, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 128 × 98 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery

Sisqo Ndombe is a Congolese artist who makes figurative paintings with magical realist or surrealist elements. His work makes use of bright colors and shows subjects with ecstatic gazes. This may be read as a celebration of self and of identity. His paintings with their pairings of dual figures, with their holding of cockerels and flowers, speak to inheritance, beauty, complexity, and African spirituality.

Kelani Fatai

Kelani Fatai is a young Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied painting and design at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. His works are figurative paintings with a strong focus on portraits of women dressed in fashionable clothes. Very notably, the backgrounds in his paintings are covered in flowers. The realism and strongly aesthetic quality of his paintings, done in a style reminiscent of Kehinde Wiley, give them their great appeal.

Bara Sketchbook

Bara Sketchbook, The sons of Wilde and wilden, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 60 × 48 in (152.4 × 121.9 cm). Image Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery.

Bara Sketchbook is a painter whose works are done in strong and vivid neon colours. The subjects of his painting are often presented in intimate poses, and from how much character he infuses through the use of colours and intense gazes, one can surmise that they have strong, complex personalities. He, very pointedly, is a painter of illustrious figures.

Wilson Imini

Wilson Imini, Untitled, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 111.8 × 88.9 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery

Wilson Imini is a young painter based in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. His interests and œuvre are focused on figurative paintings of famous figures in which he blends life portraiture with imagination. The paintings are done in bright—or more appropriately, bold colours. There are large swathes of sky and grass and intense young faces tinged red. The figures in the paintings are self-assured and powerful, occupying a central world in which all forces and influences seem to belong to and revolve around them.

Rodney Asikhia will be exhibiting at Booth 114 at Artexpo Dallas from September 16 – 18, 2022.

One of the top urban art galleries in the nation, End to End, E2E is a Graffiti & Street Art term that refers to a huge graffiti piece that covers a wall from one end to the other. On a subway train, it refers to a piece that covers the entire train, end to end. The street abbreviation is E2E.

This lexicon has been the inspiration behind End to End Gallery in their downtown Hollywood, Florida, gallery. Jeremiah Heller, owner and curator, created the space to feature a curated collection of modern and urban contemporary art from his own personal collection.
